House Resolution 36

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING DREW UNITED FOR PROGRESS FOR ITS OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE TO THE TOWN OF DREW, MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, as one of the most respected and distinguished community organizations in the State of Mississippi, Drew United for Progress is dedicated to improving the lives of the citizens of Drew, Mississippi, through its tremendous hard work and outstanding contributions to its community; and

WHEREAS, nestled between Grenada and Cleveland, Mississippi, the quaint town of Drew is about 1.1 square miles, with a population of about 1,727 citizens who are tremendously supported by the efforts of Drew United for Progress that works diligently to promote and expand the unique charm of the town; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Drew United for Progress is to increase prosperity in the City of Drew by unifying the community and partnering with both private and public organizations to inspire the community and enhance the social and economic well-being of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, the vision of this exceptional organization is to develop Drew into a town that will be economically prosperous, growth-oriented and unified, with excellent infrastructure, safe and affordable housing for citizens of all income levels, outstanding schools and easy access to nutritious and healthy food for all citizens; and

WHEREAS, Drew United for Progress is comprised of the following exceptional and outstanding members: Mary Phillips, President; Betty Smith, Vice-President; Gloria Dickerson, Treasurer; Hazel Harris, Secretary; Otha O'Neal, Assistant Secretary; Marvin Flemmons; Norika Smith; Keisha Phillips; Hazel Wallace; Tara Robinson; Melanie Townsend-Blackmon and Nettie Davis; and

WHEREAS, throughout the years, Drew United members have offered their unique talents and abilities to improve and maintain the charm and lovely appeal of Drew, and they frequently join with other organizations in their community to combine efforts to make a significant impact, and these partnerships include working with WE2gether, Hope Credit Union, Hope Enterprise, Drew Collaborative and partnering with the community food pantry to provide food for those most in need; and

WHEREAS, with its continuous encouragement of community fellowship, Drew United organizes annual events such as the community festival that brings families together with exciting cultures, delicious food, inspiring music and loads of fun, and because of their sincere love for the place they call home, the members of Drew United have dedicated countless hours to assisting and sponsoring beautification and clean-up projects around the town; and

WHEREAS, the tremendous efforts of Drew United for Progress have had an extraordinarily positive impact on the community, which is a true testament to the town's perseverance and courage; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend distinguished Mississippi organizations, especially those such as Drew United for Progress, whose unwavering dedication and commitment to its community brings honor to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Drew United for Progress for its exceptional community service and magnificent devotion to the prosperity and improvement of its community, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of its future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of Drew United for Progress and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
