TO THE MISSISSIPPI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

GOVERNOR’S VETO MESSAGE FOR HOUSE BILL 1687:

I am returning House Bill 1687: “AN ACT TO RESTORE THE RIGHT OF SUFFRAGE TO PATRICK JOSEPH FICK OF HARRISON COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.”

Mississippi law allows for the re-enfranchisement of voting rights for individuals convicted of certain crimes.  However, this restitution is dependent upon the support of law enforcement and the person’s ability to show responsibility and honesty after conviction.  Individuals with past felonies who continue to violate the law do not meet this criteria and should not have this right restored

Therefore, I am vetoing House Bill 1687.

Respectfully submitted,

PHIL BRYANT

GOVERNOR
