Senate Concurrent Resolution 652

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GERMANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL "LADY MAVERICKS" SOCCER TEAM AND COACH MICHAEL GUIDRY FOR WINNING ITS FIRST 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Germantown High School Senior Sam Pennock waited years for the opportunity she had on February 17, 2018, at the 5A Girls' State Championship match.  She and the other seven Maverick seniors had lost in the State Championship in both their freshman season.  So when the ball bounced to Pennock, giving her a clean look at the goal from 20 yards out on the left wing in double overtime, she knew exactly what to do with it.  Pennock's goal had a double effect:  It gave the Germantown "Lady Mavericks" a 2-1 victory and its first State Title in girls' soccer, and it set off a raucous celebration for the Maverick fans who had sat through four seasons' worth of weather.  It was a balmy 70 degrees and sunny when the game started, and 53 degrees and raining sideways in a steady 15 to 20 mile-per-hour winds by halftime, but the fans who stayed saw a great soccer match; and

WHEREAS, Germantown (17-4-2) struck first with a goal off the foot of another senior, Jordan Jones, in the 12th minute.  She crossed up Long Beach Goldkeeper Alexis Wilson, who did everything she could to bring in the diving save.  Long Beach (20-1-1) had few opportunities to respond until late in the second half.  The equalizer finally came in the 74th minute when Germantown Goldkeeper Georgia Jordan deflected a shot on her goal right to Long Beach's Susie Stevison, who booted it into the back of the net.  The two teams played evenly through the rest of regulation, both of the 10-minute overtime periods and through the first seven minutes of sudden-death; and

WHEREAS, "That is what a Championship Game is supposed to look like," Germantown Coach Michael Guidry said.  "Just back and forth.  They had moments where they were in control, and we had moments when we thought we were in control.  I'm just so happy for these girls, because they've worked so hard"; and

WHEREAS, the 2018 Germantown High School "Lady Mavericks" Soccer Team Championship Roster:  Lynsey Cook, Hannah Henderson, Georgia Jordan, Anna Lloyd, Darby Melia, Rylee McGee, Sam Pennock, Alice Brown, Maloy Mitchell, Iris Ball, Amelia Agostinelli, Abbie Hanna, Lily Hardesty, Morgan Evans, Frankie Wood, Grayson Amis, Taé McGehee, Maggie Robinson, Sarah Addison Snoddy, Daden Wood, Jordan Jones, Lauren James, Emery Bryson, Miriam Walker, Mattie Lewis, Caroline Rocray, Keely Marshall, Demi Damon, Bella Snoddy, and Kayla Young; Head Coach Michael Guidry; and Assistant Coach Katie Holen; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Germantown High School "Lady Mavericks" Soccer Team and Coach Michael Guidry for winning its first 5A State Championship, and extend to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Guidry and Germantown Principal Wesley Quick, forwarded to the Madison County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
