Senate Concurrent Resolution 592

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MEMBERS OF 100 BLACK MEN OF JACKSON, INC., ON THEIR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, COMMUNITY IN 2017.

WHEREAS, because of their extensive and outstanding community service in 2017, the members of 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc., have become a pinnacle of hope for youth, families and communities within the Jackson, Mississippi, area; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of former Jackson Mayor, Harvey Johnson, the members of 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc., have a core mission of improving the quality of life for communities within the Jackson, Mississippi, area through mentoring young men of African descent to achieve education excellence, health and wellness, economic empowerment and leadership development; and

WHEREAS, the Jackson Chapter is comprised of members who are dedicated to making a sustainable impact on the quality of communities within the City of Jackson, and who mentor in nine Jackson Public Schools (JPS) in order to demonstrate strong leadership for their mentees to emulate in the future; and

WHEREAS, some of the chapter's vast community service accomplishments for 2017 include: announcing that the composite grade average of the mentees is 80.7% after the first semester; taking JPS senior students to visit the Nissan Corporate Office in Tennessee; sponsoring an aquatics program and extending free swimming lessons to 242 students; sponsoring 104 JPS students to attend an aviation-inspired learning adventure for six days at the National Flight Academy in Florida; hosting an annual Scholarship/Mentoring Banquet where the organization gave $17,500.00 in scholarships and raised over $65,000.00; sponsoring two ACT Prep Workshops to assist students in improving their ACT scores; hosting an agricultural workshop in conjunction with the USDA and National Baptist Convention; building a High Tunnel in order to teach the mentees how to grow fruits and vegetables; and taking 14 mentees to the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., National Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize and commend this outstanding organization which has brought honor to its community and to the State of Mississippi through community service:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the members of 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc., for their outstanding community service that has made a tremendous impact on the youth of Mississippi, which will continue to positively impact the state for years to come, and we further extend to the members our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the members of 100 Black Men of Jackson, Inc., and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
