A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ANNE ELIZABETH BUYS, OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, UPON BEING CROWNED MISS MISSISSIPPI 2017.

     WHEREAS, Anne Elizabeth Buys, 21, of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was crowned Miss Mississippi 2017 on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at the Vicksburg Convention Center, capturing the No. 1 spot sought after by a competitive field of young ladies who competed for the coveted title to represent Mississippi in the Miss America Pageant; and

     WHEREAS, Anne Elizabeth Buys is a Senior Communications Major at Mississippi State University.  The President's List Scholar plans to obtain a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in

Communications with a double emphasis in Broadcasting and Public Relations.  She hopes to pursue a career in sports broadcasting and continue philanthropic work with nonprofits; and

     WHEREAS, at Mississippi State University, Anne Elizabeth is a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Gamma Beta Phi, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Mississippi State University Fashion Board, and the Public Relations Student Society of America; and

     WHEREAS, through participating in the Miss Mississippi Organization, Anne Elizabeth has received more than $20,000.00 in scholarship money to pursue her college education; and

     WHEREAS, she was named a Quality of Life Finalist at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City on August 30, 2017; and

     WHEREAS, Anne Elizabeth's platform, Water for Life, aims to provide water and relieve some of the suffering caused by a lack of clean drinking water for people in the United States and abroad.  She has spoken to more than 50 civic organizations, schools and churches, and has organized Zumba fitness fundraising events to benefit Water for Life.  Her work has been featured in newspapers and on television news shows across Mississippi discussing the work of Operation Blessing International, as well as the need for clean drinking water in America.  She has raised over $7,200.00 to fund four clean water wells and two rain cisterns in India, and partnered with Hinds Community College and Tougaloo College to collect over 48,000 bottles of water to aid the citizens of Flint, Michigan, during the water crisis they faced due to lead-contaminated drinking water.  Clean water is vital for life, and we must work to address this issue and transform lives by providing this simple gift; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor and pride to her family, community, and the entire State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Anne Elizabeth Buys upon being crowned Miss Mississippi 2017 and extend sincerest wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Anne Elizabeth Buys and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
