Senate Concurrent Resolution 516

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING FORMER OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI POLE VAULT STANDOUT SAM KENDRICKS FOR WINNING A GOLD MEDAL AT THE 2017 IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LONDON, ENGLAND.

WHEREAS, Oxford native and former Ole Miss Star Sam Kendricks followed up his June 2016 U.S. Title with a Gold Medal in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships; and

WHEREAS, ten years had passed since an American claimed Gold in the Men's Pole Vault at the IAAF World Athletics Championships.  Sam Kendricks put an end to the drought on August 1, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Kendricks was the only man to clear 19 feet 6.25 inches to win Gold at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, which gave the United States its first Gold in the event since Brad Walker accomplished the feat in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Kendricks, a 24-year-old, cleared his first five jumps and outlasted Poland's Piotr Lisek, who earned a Silver Medal with a clearance of 5.89 meters; and

WHEREAS, it has been a successful summer for Kendricks, who also won Gold at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in June in Sacramento.  He won the Pole Vault Competition with a career-best mark of 6.00 meters.  That was the sixth U.S. Title of Kendricks' career; and

WHEREAS, at the Olympics Kendricks said, "Six meters is a career point.  Every great jumper has at least one six-meter jump.  If I can replicate even close to this at Worlds, I've got a shot at the title.  Going for the Gold in London is my goal."  He made good on his aspirations; and

WHEREAS, last year, Kendricks took home a Bronze Medal with a mark of 5.85 meters at the Summer Olympics in Brazil.  Sandhill, Mississippi, native Tori Bowie claimed a Gold Medal in the Women's 100-Meter Dash when she ran a 10.85, which gave her a victory by .01 of a second; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the Oxford and University of Mississippi community in recognizing a Mississippi Athlete and Military Officer who has brought honor to his family, his community, his university and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate former Oxford High School and University of Mississippi Pole Vault Standout Sam Kendricks for winning a Gold Medal at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature for continued success on this auspicious occasion.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Sam Kendricks and his family, forwarded to the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi and the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
