A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED AND LAUDABLE LEGISLATIVE CAREER OF THE MOST HONORABLE AND DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN FROM TALLAHATCHIE, REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT E. HUDDLESTON.

     WHEREAS, the honorable and distinguished Representative Robert Earl Huddleston retired from the Mississippi House of Representatives on March 1, 2018, after tirelessly working on behalf of the people of Mississippi and House District 30, which includes parts of Bolivar, Quitman, Sunflower and Tallahatchie Counties, for more than 20 consecutive years from the historical floor of the majestic and elaborate House Chamber; and

     WHEREAS, born on February 22, 1955, in Sumner, Mississippi, the Honorable Representative Robert Huddleston was diligently serving the citizens of his community well before his election to the Mississippi House of Representatives, a fact evidenced by his service on his local school board and as the former President of the Tallahatchie County Union for Progress; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Huddleston was a construction supervisor before he became the distinguished gentleman from Tallahatchie, and he utilized the expertise he garnered while managing his crew to help him successfully meet the needs of his constituents; and

     WHEREAS, upon his election in 1996, the Representative Huddleston wasted no time requesting the legislation, amendments and reports that would help effectuate into law the policies and practices that his constituents had elected him to support, including key pieces of local and private legislation specifically for the Towns of Sumner and Tutwiler, the Tallahatchie County Correctional Authority, and the Institute of Community Services Head Start Program in Tallahatchie County; and

     WHEREAS, during his tenure as a legislator, Representative Huddleston served on the following committees:  Agriculture, Conservation and Water Resources, Oil, Gas and Other Minerals, Penitentiary, Public Buildings, Grounds and Lands, Labor, Appropriations, Corrections, Medicaid, Apportionment and Elections, County Affairs and Workforce Development; and

     WHEREAS, since 1996, Representative Huddleston, a Sumner Democrat, gained the respect, trust and friendship of his fellow lawmakers, beginning as a freshman lawmaker and ultimately rising to become the Chairperson of the House Interstate Cooperation Committee; and

     WHEREAS, not one to limit his community involvement to the Legislature, Representative Huddleston, a devout member of the Baptist faith, has always been active in his community and dedicated to improving the quality of life for all citizens, as evidenced by his service with the NAACP, the Aaron Henry Help Center, the ICS, the Magnificent Seven, and Tallahatchie Housing, where he and his fellow members were able to secure 13 houses and 360 apartments for the families and citizens of Tallahatchie County; and

     WHEREAS, the members of the Mississippi House of Representatives will cherish the bond and common goals for the betterment of the Magnolia State shared with the Honorable Representative Robert E. Huddleston, and the impeccable public service he imparted for over 20 years to the Mississippi Legislature, his wife, the former Chinito Bouie; his children, Anthony Davis, Mamie Huddleston, Robert Huddleston, Jr., Tina Bowie and Marquette Garner; and the constituents of District 30; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor the legacy of one of our own, Representative Robert E. Huddleston, who has represented his district, this body and the people of this state with honor and dignity:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished and laudable legislative career of the most honorable and distinguished Gentleman from Tallahatchie, Representative Robert Huddleston, and express fondest respect and best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Robert Earl Huddleston and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
