A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING DR. GLENDA BASKIN GLOVER UPON BEING ELECTED AS THE 30TH INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC.

     WHEREAS, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, the esteemed president of Tennessee State University (TSU) and a member of the Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in Jackson, Mississippi, is being honored upon being elected the 30th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), which has the distinction of being the first Greek-letter organization in the nation that was established by African-American college women; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Glover comes to the position of International President of AKA with many years of experience with the nearly 300,000 member organization as she had held several executive positions such as International First Vice President and former International Treasurer and has served on several international committees that include:  finance, building and properties, investments, the Legacy Endowment Fund and Corporate Support Committee, and she has served as president, vice president and treasurer of the Beta Delta Omega Chapter of AKA in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to being a trailblazer in her sorority, Dr. Glover is a trailblazer in academia as she earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from TSU, a masters in business administration from Clark Atlanta University, a PhD in business and economics from George Washington University and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University, and she is a certified public accountant, licensed attorney and is one of only two African-American women to hold the PHD-CPA-JD combination in the nation; and

     WHEREAS, as the author of more than 100 articles and papers and as the recipient of numerous awards and honors as well as being a member of several professional and civic organizations, Dr. Glover is regarded as one of the nation's experts in economics and finance; and

     WHEREAS, before becoming president of TSU in January 2013, where notably under her leadership, student enrollment, alumni fundraising and research dollars have significantly increased,  Dr. Glover has held high-level positions in the corporate sectors, and she is among few women to rise to the heights to serve on corporate boards of publicly traded corporations such as:  Pinnacle Financial Partners, The Lenox Group, Citigroup-Student Loan Corporation and First Guaranty Bancshares, where she chairs the Audit Committee and is experienced in corporate governance; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her endeavors, Dr. Glover has been lovingly supported by her husband, Charles Glover and their two adult children, Attorney Candace Glover and Dr. Charles Glover II; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor a vibrant individual such as Dr. Glover, whose impressive career, contributions to academia as well as her civic contributions have helped lead her to her leadership position as the 30th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a position in which she will assume the mantles of sisterhood, leadership and service:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover upon being elected as the 30th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and wish her much success as she leads the organization in its mission to serve all mankind.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
