Senate Concurrent Resolution 606

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MARCH 24, 2016, AS "UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH DAY IN MISSISSIPPI" TO EMPHASIZE THE VALUE OF SCHOLARLY INQUIRY AND THE APPLICATION OF RESEARCH TO THE EDUCATION OF FUTURE LEADERS.

WHEREAS, on March 24, 2016, undergraduates from all eight public universities in Mississippi will be sharing the results of their independent research efforts in an event called Posters in the Rotunda in the State Capitol.  Mississippi will be the 18th state in the nation to hold such showcase, and it will be a wonderful opportunity for the students to talk with legislators and the media about the contributions that their work makes to the economic, scientific, and cultural missions of the state and its residents; and

WHEREAS, research activity at our public universities illustrates the value Mississippi places on scholarly inquiry and the application of this expertise to understanding and improving our world and educating future leaders; and

WHEREAS, our universities offer hundreds of programs of study for superior academic experiences that provide each graduate with the background necessary for a lifetime of scholastic, social and professional growth.  Mississippi university faculty, staff and students participating in research projects are being recognized by such prestigious groups as the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which is the definitive list for the top research universities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we honor these students who have brought honor to their universities, their communities and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby designate March 24, 2016, as "Undergraduate Research Day in Mississippi" to emphasize the value of scholarly inquiry and the application of research to the education of future leaders, and encourage all Mississippians to support their research universities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the students and faculty participating in the Posters in the Rotunda exhibition, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
