COMMITTEE AMENDMENT NO 1 PROPOSED TO

Senate Bill No. 2567

     Amend by striking all after the enacting clause and inserting in lieu thereof the following:

 


     SECTION 1.  (1)  The Legislature finds there is a need to assess the duties and services provided by the justice court judges, the manner in which justice court judges are elected and the feasibility of nonpartisan elections for justice court judge elections. 

     (2)  The task force shall be composed of the following members:

          (a)  The chair and vice chair of the following committees:

               (i)  The House Apportionment and Elections Committee;

               (ii)  The Senate Elections Committee;

               (iii)  The House Judiciary A Committee;

               (iv)  The Senate Judiciary, Division A Committee;

               (v)  The House Fees and Salaries Committee; and

               (vi)  The Senate Fees, Salaries and Administration                    Committee.   

          (b)  One (1) Representative appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and

          (c)  One (1) Senator appointed by the Lieutenant Governor.

     Members of the committee shall receive per diem, travel or other expenses, if authorized by the Management Committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate, from the contingent expense funds of their respective houses in the same amounts as provided for committee meetings when the Legislature is not in session; provided that no per diem or expense for attending meetings of the committee shall be paid while the Legislature is in session.

     The study committee shall be dissolved on January 1, 2008.

     SECTION 2.  In addition to any other salary provided for justice court judges, every justice court judge shall receive as supplemental compensation for the anticipated increase of his or her services an amount not to exceed Three Thousand Dollars ($3,000.00).

     SECTION 3.  Section 1 of this act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.  Section 2 of this act shall take effect and be in force from and after October 1, 2007.


     Further, amend by striking the title in its entirety and inserting in lieu thereof the following:

 


     AN ACT TO CREATE A TASK FORCE TO STUDY THE MANNER IN WHICH JUSTICE COURT JUDGES ARE ELECTED AND THE FEASIBILITY OF NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS FOR JUSTICE COURT JUDGE ELECTIONS; TO PROVIDE A SUPPLEMENTAL SALARY INCREASE TO JUSTICE COURT JUDGES FOR CERTAIN ADDITIONAL SERVICES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
