Senate Resolution 10

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE RIDGELAND HIGH SCHOOL "LADY TITANS" GIRLS SOCCER TEAM FOR THEIR FIFTH CONSECUTIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Rachel Givan's goal in the 71st minute was the game-winner as Ridgeland High School "Lady Titans" Girls Soccer Team defeated Long Beach 2-1 in the Class 4A State Championship game at Millsaps College's Harper Davis Field on Saturday, February 10, 2007; and

WHEREAS, the title was the fifth straight for Ridgeland (20-2-2), ranked No. 2 by The Clarion-Ledger; and

WHEREAS, Rachel Givan, a North Carolina signee, spent the past five years building her legacy as the best girls soccer player in Mississippi history.  It took just a split second in the championship game, and a powerful shot off her left foot, for the Ridgeland High School Senior to add the exclamation point.  The final goal of her high school career lifted Ridgeland to the Class 4A State Championship at Millsaps College's Harper Davis Field before an estimated crowd of 1,000; and

WHEREAS, "I couldn't have written a script any better," said Ridgeland Coach Josh Avenmarg.  While Givan clutched the State Championship trophy after her goal in the 71st minute, Coach Avenmarg stood at midfield holding up five fingers - representing each of the state titles the team has won in the school's five-year existence.  Becca MacNeill also scored for the Lady Titans; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this singular achievement by a team of student athletes which has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Ridgeland High School "Lady Titans" Girls Soccer Team and Coach Josh Avenmarg for their fifth consecutive Class 4A State Championship and extend to them the best wishes of the Senate in their future athletic and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Avenmarg for the team and the Principal of Ridgeland High School and be forwarded to the Madison County Board of Education and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
