A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE COLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL "LADY COUGARS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WERT SPIVA, JR., FOR WINNING THE CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2006-2007 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, Ashley Daniel's basket with 10 seconds remaining clinched the victory for the Coldwater High School "Lady Cougars" Girls Basketball Team over Coahoma County by a score of 62-61 on March 10, 2007, which won the Class 2A State Championship; and

     WHEREAS, this victory was followed by a trip to the Overall State Tournament in Tupelo where the Lady Cougars made the semifinals and ended their 2006-2007 season with an outstanding record of 31-6; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Cougars participated in the following tournaments on their way to the State Championship:  Coldwater Cougar Classic (Champions); Region 3-2A Tournament (Division) Runners-Up (2nd); North Mississippi 2A Tournament (Runners-Up); and Mississippi High School Activities Association State Tournament (2A Champions); and

     WHEREAS, the following team members received individual honors for their stellar performance:  Ashley Daniel, All-Division Team, Division 3-2A Co-MVP, North/South All-Star, All-State Tournament Team, All-North State; Lanita Futrell, All-Division Team, All-North State Team, All-State Tournament Team; and Rochelle Epps, North State Tournament Team, and All-State Tournament Team; and

     WHEREAS, the roster of the Coldwater Lady Cougars is as follows:  Lanita Futrell (10), Tempestt Sandridge (9), Kinshannta Hall (12), Kayla Davis (11), Kiera Reed (9), Alishay Allen (9), Rochell Epps (12), Waynesha Page (11), Waytasha Page (11), Ashley Daniel (11), Ebony Ellis (9), Jelnelia Hawkins (9), Kiearra Williams (11) and Amber Milam (9); and

     WHEREAS, Head Coach Wert Spiva, Jr., and Assistant Coach Sharon Johnson forged an effective program with these young ladies and made the following comment following the state title:  "This team was resilient in their efforts and was able to achieve success through commitment, dedication and hard work, which gave us a chance to win in the end"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the special achievements of this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Coldwater High School "Lady Cougars" and Head Coach Wert Spiva, Jr., for winning the Class 2A State Championship and extend to them the best wishes of the Legislature in their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Wert Spiva and the Principal of Coldwater High School, be forwarded to the Tate County School Board of Trustees and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
