A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY "LADY TIGERS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DENISE TAYLOR FOR WINNING THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (SWAC) REGULAR SEASON TITLE AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2006-2007 RECORD.

     WHEREAS, the Jackson State University "Lady Tigers" Girls Basketball Team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title with a 14-4 SWAC record and a 20-9 overall mark; and

     WHEREAS, in the conference tournament, JSU beat Mississippi Valley State 68-52 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 68-53, but fell to Prairie View A&M in the Championship Game; and

     WHEREAS, early in the season, the Lady Tigers recorded some big wins.  JSU beat Southern Miss 47-45 and the University of Alabama-Birmingham 78-67; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Tigers enjoyed a No. 1 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament, but it was not enough to overcome an equally hungry Prairie View A&M team.  The Lady Tigers fell 67-62 to the Lady Panthers Saturday afternoon in the Championship Game at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Arena.  "I am extremely proud of these young ladies," said JSU Head Coach Denise Taylor.  "We had a good season, we had an opportunity to play for the conference championship and an NCAA bid"; and

     WHEREAS, the team was selected to participate in the 2007 Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, the roster of the 2006-2007 Lady Tigers is as follows:  Shelita Burns, Senior (SWAC All-Tournament Team); Nyasha Chambwe, Junior; LaSharee Christian, Junior; Christina Cobbins, Sophomore; Courtney Dowdy, Sophomore; Brittany Dowdy, Sophomore; Carena Easley, Junior; Krystal Fontenot, Junior; LaShonda Gains, Sophomore; Aundrea Johnson, Freshman; Shaneka Jones, Junior; Angel Liddell, Senior; Candace Shivers, Junior; Shante Stanford, Senior; Verenique Warren, Junior; Tierra Young, Sophomore; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the accomplishments of this group of university student athletes who have brought honor to their university, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson State University "Lady Tigers" Girls Basketball Team and Head Coach Denise Taylor for winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Regular Season Title and for their outstanding 2006-2007 record, and extend to them the best wishes of the Legislature on their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be forwarded to Coach Denise Taylor and JSU President Mason and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
