A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY "TIGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TEVESTER ANDERSON FOR WINNING THE SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2006-2007 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, the Jackson State University "Tigers" Boys Basketball Team punched their ticket for the NCAA Tournament with an 81-71 victory over Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Arena; and

     WHEREAS, as the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Champions - the Jackson State Tigers - will face the Florida Gators, 2006 NCAA Champions and the 2007 SEC Champions in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, Jackson State guard, Trey Johnson showed why he is the best player in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season.  Johnson scored 13 points in the first five minutes of the Men's SWAC Tournament Championship Game, then scored seven points during a game-breaking 9-0 run.  Johnson scored 33 points and earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors; and

     WHEREAS, in the championship game, Johnson set the school's single-season scoring mark with 922 points.  The record was previously held by former Tiger Lindsey Hunter.  Hunter finished the 1992-1993 season with 907 points; and

     WHEREAS, Grant Maxey, who made the All-Tournament Team, scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Jackson State and Carl Lucas scored 22 points; and

     WHEREAS, the Jackson State University 2006-2007 Men's Basketball Roster is as follows:

     WHEREAS, Jackson State University Head Coach Tevester Anderson is to be congratulated on leading his squad to the NCAA Tournament and it is with great pride that we recognize the accomplishments of this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their university, community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson State University "Tigers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Tevester Anderson for winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference and for their outstanding 2006-2007 season, and extend to them our best wishes for success in their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Head Coach Tevester Anderson and Jackson State University President Ronald Mason, Jr., forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
