Senate Concurrent Resolution 606

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING RED SOX HALL OF FAMER GEORGE CHARLES "BOOMER" SCOTT, JR., FROM GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2007.

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled the Class of 2007, which features George Charles "Boomer" Scott, Jr., from Greenville, Mississippi, Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame player and manager with several minor and major league teams including the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees; and

     WHEREAS, George Scott's famed nickname was "Boomer" and he referred to his home runs as "Taters."  The late Red Sox 3rd Baseman Joe Foy gave him his nickname in 1966 when they were both rookies and Foy said, "Man, you really put a boom on that ball."  The nickname started out as "Boom" and grew to "Boomer" over time.  While managing in the Mexican League, he picked up the nickname of "King Kong"; and

     WHEREAS, he wore a distinctive necklace while playing for the Brewers and when a writer asked him to identify the material on the necklace, George replied, "Second basemen's teeth."  The necklace is prominent on his 1975 Topps baseball card; and

     WHEREAS, George Scott's baseball highlights include the following:

     ·  Inducted Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, November 9, 2006;

     ·  Manager, Berkshire Black Bears, Northern League, Pittsfield, MA, 2002;

     ·  Manager, Rio Grande Valley White Wings, Texas-Louisiana League, 2001;

     ·  Head Baseball Coach, Roxbury CC, Boston, Massachusetts;

     ·  Manager, Massachusetts Mad Dogs, Northeast League, 1996, where he led the team to the highest winning percentage (.718) in all of pro baseball;

     ·  Player-Manager, Mexican League, 1980-1984;

     ·  Major League Baseball Career, 14 seasons, 1966-1979:

          ▶  Played 2,034 games, career batting average of .268, 271 HRs, 1,051 RBIs in 14 seasons;

          ▶  Played more games at 1st base (988) than any Red Sox player in history;

          ▶  8 Golden Gloves, played in 3 All-Star Games;

          ▶  12th on All-Time Boston home run list;

          ▶  Voted by fan poll in 1982 as the 2nd Team 1st Baseman on the All-Time Boston Red Sox Team;

     ·  1979 Boston Red Sox 45 games, .224, 4 HRs, 23 RBIs; New York Yankees 16 games, .318, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, signed as free agent by NY Yankees on August 26, 1979, granted free agency on November 1, 1979;

     ·  1978 Boston Red Sox 120 games, .233, 12 HRs, 54 RBIs, team that lost one-game playoff to NY Yankees;

     ·  1977 Boston Red Sox 157 games, .269, 33 HRs, 95 RBIs, played in 1977 All-Star Game;

     ·  1976 Milwaukee Brewers 156 games, .274, 18 HRs, 77 RBIs, Golden Glove;

     ·  1975 Milwaukee Brewers 158 games, .285, 36 HRs, 109 RBIs:

          ▶  Golden Glove;

          ▶  Played in 1975 All-Star Game;

          ▶  Led AL in home runs with 36;

          ▶  Led AL in RBI with 109;

     ·  1974 Milwaukee Brewers 158 games, .281, 17 HRs, 82 RBIs, Golden Glove;

     ·  1965 Boston AA Team, Pittsfield, MA, Eastern League, won the Triple Crown;

     ·  At Coleman High School, Greenville, MS, 1959-1962, George was a three-sport star:  football, baseball and basketball; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding athlete who has brought honor to his community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Red Sox Hall of Famer George Charles "Boomer" Scott, Jr., from Greenville, Mississippi, upon his induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2007, and wish him and his family continued success in all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to George Scott at induction ceremonies on July 27-28, 2007, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
