A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISSISSIPPI STATE TREASURER TATE REEVES FOR HIS ELECTION AS PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE TREASURERS (NAST).
WHEREAS, Mississippi State Treasurer Tate Reeves was named the President of the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) on December 1, 2006. In March 2006, Reeves had been elected Senior Vice President of NAST, which put him in line to become the next President; and
WHEREAS, Tate Reeves has been actively involved in the association since his swearing in as Mississippi's Treasurer in January 2004. Reeves was nominated for the position from a group of his peers representing the Southern State Treasurers. Reeves was sworn into his position at the NAST Treasury Management Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the National Association of State Treasurers, founded in 1976, is an organization of state financial leaders. NAST membership is composed of all State Treasurers, or state finance officials with comparable responsibilities, from the United States, its commonwealths, territories and the District of Columbia. NAST is recognized as a national force whose work has influenced public policy at both the state and federal levels. NAST is instrumental in developing and promoting standards of excellence regarding ethical conduct, policy guidelines and accountability, and model legislation and regulations; and
WHEREAS, "It is an honor to be elected to the leadership of this prestigious organization by a bipartisan group of my peers," said Reeves. "NAST plays an important policy-setting role at the state and national levels. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work on issues vital to financial policy in all 50 states while providing a voice for Mississippi at this critical time in our history"; and
WHEREAS, Tate Reeves was elected as Mississippi's 53rd Treasurer on November 4, 2003. Currently, Treasurer Reeves is the youngest State Treasurer serving in the country and the youngest statewide elected official in Mississippi. He is also the first Republican Treasurer in the state's history; and
WHEREAS, Tate is a Rankin County native and a graduate of Florence High School. He is an honors graduate of Millsaps College and holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics. While at Millsaps, he played point guard for the Millsaps Majors basketball team. Tate has continued to be an active alumnus and remains involved with his alma mater by serving as a member of the Investment Policy Board for the Millsaps College General Louis Wilson Fund; and
WHEREAS, prior to becoming Treasurer, Tate was a member of the Trustmark Investment Strategy Committee and served as an Assistant Vice President for AmSouth, formerly known as Deposit Guaranty National Bank. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation (CFA). Tate is also a member of the CFA Society of Mississippi and is a member of the CFA Institute, an organization that leads the investment industry by setting the highest standards of ethics and professional excellence. In 1996, he was the recipient of the Mississippi Society of Financial Analysts Award; and
WHEREAS, Tate currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) of Mississippi. Tate also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the College Savings Plans of Mississippi and the Health Care Trust Fund; and
WHEREAS, Tate and his wife Elee Williams Reeves, a Tylertown native, are the proud parents of one daughter, Sarah Tyler. Currently, the Reeves family attends Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, where Elee and Tate serve as Co-Chairman of the 2006 Capital Campaign. They have been very committed to many civic and charitable organizations in Mississippi, including the Mississippi Society of Disabilities, UMC Children's Cancer Clinic, Middle Mississippi Girl Scout Council, Boys & Girls Club of Mississippi, Stewpot Ministries, the Exchange Club Parent Child Center, and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Tate is currently serving as the 2006 State Chairman for the United Way and as a member of the YMCA Finance Committee; and
WHEREAS, this a great honor for Mississippi and well-deserved recognition for Tate Reeves, who is playing a major role in the State of Mississippi's retention of its favorable bond rating in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and ensuring that Mississippi remains fiscally strong:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mississippi State Treasurer Tate Reeves for his election as President of the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST), and for his national leadership role by his peers which reflects well on our state, and we extend our best wishes to him and his family in their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to State Treasurer Tate Reeves and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
