AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 99-17-1, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REVISE THE 270-DAY CRIMINAL TRIAL REQUIREMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Section 99-17-1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     99-17-1. * * *  All offenses for which indictments are presented to the court shall be tried no later than two hundred seventy (270) days after the accused has been arraigned unless good cause is shown by the prosecution for a continuance by written motion setting forth the basis for the good cause, and the court agrees that good cause has been shown.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
