House Resolution 135

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE CITY OF MERIDIAN AND THE MERIDIAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON OBTAINING A 71% VOTER APPROVAL ON ITS $19.5 MILLION SCHOOL BOND ELECTION TO IMPROVE ITS PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

WHEREAS, Meridian residents, as well as those who live in the Meridian Separate School District, voted in favor of a $19.5 million school bond by an overwhelming 71%; and

WHEREAS, the four major areas targeted for funding by the bond include, air conditioning for all cafeterias, renovating schools, implementing small learning communities at Meridian High School, and a new, separate, state-of-the-art building for the ninth grade on the campus of Meridian High School that will provide more opportunity for effective and expanded learning; and

WHEREAS, the initial bond request was a result of an 18-month study of the district's future needs by the Framing our Future task force, which is composed of nearly 60 parents, teachers, principals and a diverse cross-section of citizens; and

WHEREAS, school officials, as well as parents, community leaders, and other interested individuals have worked diligently by going door-to-door distributing pamphlets and meeting with civic clubs and other groups getting "the word" out; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize those committed to improving the public schools of our state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the City of Meridian and the Meridian Public Schools upon the occasion of obtaining a 71% voter approval on its $19.5 million school bond election to improve its public schools.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
