A RESOLUTION COMMENDING CLINTON "TREY" JOHNSON AND CONGRATULATING HIM FOR HIS ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ON BEING NAMED THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (SWAC) PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND RECEIVING THE 2007 CELLULAR SOUTH HOWELL TROPHY.

     WHEREAS, Jackson State University senior, Clinton "Trey" Johnson, has stamped his name in the school's record book and in the hearts of the Tigers' faithful supporters throughout a year of most spectacular and eye-catching play, catapulting him to the top position of being named this year's Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Year and recipient of the 2007 Cellular South Howell Trophy; and

     WHEREAS, Johnson was chosen as the Howell Award winner in a vote by 49 media members from around the state, and that was announced Monday, March 26, during a ceremony at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum during a televised broadcast by Mississippi Public Broadcasting, becoming JSU’s first athlete to win a Cellular South Outstanding Player Award that includes the Howell Trophy, Ferriss Trophy (baseball) and Conerly Trophy (football); and

     WHEREAS, the legacy and mind-boggling numbers left behind by this do-everything star is one that falls nothing short of simply astonishing, as Trey has amassed an eye-popping 1,673 points in his career with Jackson State; and

     WHEREAS, this 6 feet 5 inch, 218 pound powerhouse from Jackson, Mississippi, was the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball this season, averaging 27.1 points per game, scoring 49 in one game - a 100-97 victory over Texas-El Paso in the Sun Bowl Tournament - setting a new Sun Bowl Tournament record with a mind-boggling total of 69 points and leading the Tigers to a 21-13 record, the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament title and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in seven years; and

     WHEREAS, having become a household name throughout the Southwestern region, Johnson hails from a family with a long athletic history in the SWAC, with family members having played at Jackson State or Alcorn State Universities, and he has been afforded the rare opportunity to share his adept talents with both the Tigers and the Braves; and

     WHEREAS, Trey, who is destined to be remembered for his exploits on the hardwood, credits his coach, fellow teammates and the team effort for making it all possible, which speaks volumes of his athletic tenacity, skill and versatility as well as his academic success, which account for the following honors:  being named 2006-2007 All-American by CollegeInsider.com, a member of the 2006-2007 All-SWAC First Team, earning a number eight ranking on JSU's all-time scoring list, SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, three-time SWAC Player of the Week, Preseason Mid-Major Player of the Year, Mid-Major All-American and ranked number 10 for the 2005-2006 NCAA scoring season; and

     WHEREAS, this mass communication major is destined to excel in the future as he allows his athletic and academic prowess to catapult him into national and international stardom; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize and commend the excellence as exhibited by scholar-athletes such as Trey Johnson, whose dynamic and unrivaled athleticism coupled with his gentle nature and academic achievement exemplifies talent and character beyond measure:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the athletic and academic success of Clinton "Trey" Johnson, congratulate him upon being named SWAC Player of the Year and receiving the 2007 Cellular South Howell Trophy and express heartfelt wishes for continued success in all of his athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Trey Johnson, Jackson State University and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
