House Resolution 123

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE CARMEN WELLS-SMITH FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, Representative Carmen Wells-Smith is retiring from the Mississippi House of Representatives after her 2007 legislative term; and

     WHEREAS, she has faithfully served the citizens of District 111, which includes Jackson County, since 1993; and

     WHEREAS, during her 14 years of service for her district, she has utilized the wisdom and experience that she has accrued to guide her in creating change for her district as well as the state; and

     WHEREAS, she currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee, and as a member of the Ethics, Marine Resources, Oil, Gas and Other Minerals, Public Health and Human Services, Public Utilities and Ways and Means Committees; and

     WHEREAS, born on November 4, 1966, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, she attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before attending Millsaps College and earning a bachelor of business administration and a master of business administration from the University of South Alabama; and

     WHEREAS, she has been lovingly supported in executing her legislative duties by her husband, Parker, and their two children, Caleb and Preston Ray; and

     WHEREAS, her congenial spirit and forthright manner have been assets to her fellow legislators and are characteristics that will be missed; and

     WHEREAS, she is an active member of the Baptist faith and gives of her time as a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Chamber of Commerce, WZZJ Christian Radio, the Mississippi Arts Fair for the Handicapped, and the Jackson County Republican Women; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the legislative leadership and dedicated service of one of our own:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Representative Carmen Wells-Smith for her many years of dedicated service and congratulate her upon the occasion of her retirement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Carmen Wells-Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
