A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE JIM C. BARNETT FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi House of Representatives will say goodbye to Representative Jim C. Barnett when he retires after 16 years of service in the Legislature; and

     WHEREAS, he has proudly represented the citizens of District 92, which includes Copiah, Franklin and Lincoln Counties, since he was elected in 1992; and

     WHEREAS, although his official title is Representative Jim C. Barnett, many lovingly refer to him as "Doctor Barnett," since he has practiced medicine in Brookhaven for 35 years and practiced 16 years for his fellow legislators; and

     WHEREAS, he was born in Edinburg, Mississippi, graduated from Tylertown High School, and attended Millsaps College and Tulane University before entering the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, earning his medical degree from the Southwestern Medical College of the University of Texas; and

     WHEREAS, upon entering the Legislature as a freshman, Representative Barnett was bestowed the great honor of being appointed to the Appropriations Committee, which was unheard of for a freshman legislator at the time; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Barnett currently serves the House of Representatives as the Vice Chairman of Ports, Harbors and Airports, as a member of Appropriations, Military Affairs, Public Health and Human Services, Public Property and Universities and Colleges; and

     WHEREAS, he has been lovingly supported in his medical and legislative career by his wife, Roberta, and his children, James (deceased), Alex, Richard, Patrick, Christopher (deceased), John, Paul and Mark; and stepchildren, Jim, Ellen and Glen; and 22 grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor legislators who lead their districts with a congenial nature and forthright manner:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Representative Jim C. Barnett for his many contributions to the legislative process and citizens of District 92 and congratulate him upon his retirement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Jim C. Barnett and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
