House Resolution 65

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE OAK GROVE HIGH SCHOOL LADY WARRIORS GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH CLAY SMITH FOR WINNING THE CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2007 SEASON.

WHEREAS, an estimated crowd of 500 fans at Harper Davis Field on the Millsaps College campus watched the Oak Grove High School Lady Warriors Girls Soccer Team dethrone the defending State Champions from Tupelo on Saturday, February 10, 2007, as they made a second-half goal by junior, Courtney Brinson, for a thrilling 1-0 victory in the Class 5A State Championship; and

WHEREAS, it was the Lady Warriors' third state title, but their first in Class 5A, finishing the 2007 season with an outstanding record of 17-1-2; and

WHEREAS, the 2007 5A State Champions finished the season ranked No. 1 with the following stats: 72 goals scored, 12 goals given up, 10 shutouts, scored an average of 3.4 goals per game and gave up .60 goals per game; and

WHEREAS, the championship team roster is as follows: Alyssa Whitehead, Junior; Emily Nettleton, Freshman; Shannon Little, Senior; Channing Griffin, Sophomore; Chelsea Cawthon, Junior; Nikki Robinson, Freshman; Linda Amaya, Junior; Lauren Tavai, Sophomore; Blair Jackson, Freshman; Seneca Eubanks, Junior; Krista Smith, Freshman; Dani Holder, Senior; Courtney Re, Sophomore; Jordan Papas, Freshman; Nicole Bryant, Freshman; Ashlee Arnau, Freshman; Maureen Bellare, Senior; Kelsey Chancellor, Junior; Tiffany Lewallen, Junior; Courtney Brinson, Junior; Lauren Herron, Sophomore; Head Coach Clay Smith; Assistant Coach Jill Breland; Principal Wayne Folkes; Athletic Director Tim Heldt; Trainer Kevin Mauldin; and Managers Shelley Songy and Brittney Wentworth; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the special achievements by a group of student athletes such as the Lady Warriors and their coach, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Oak Grove High School Lady Warriors Girls Soccer Team and Head Coach Clay Smith for winning the Class 5A State Championship and for their outstanding 2007 season and extend warmest wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Clay Smith, the Principal of Oak Grove High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
