House Resolution 61

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MRS. HATTIE HEARN MORRIS LOVING AND EXPRESSING OUR SYMPATHY UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Hattie Hearn Morris Loving, affectionately known as "Mama Hattie," passed this life on January 11, 2007; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Loving was born on November 11, 1901, to Claudius B. Morris and Tabitha D. Morris in Clay County, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, as a centenarian, Mrs. Loving had seen it all because she lived through the most impactful technological century of man, from horse and buggy to cars, planes, electricity, telephones, refrigeration, television, computers and cell phones; and

     WHEREAS, witnessing the William H. Taft campaign for the 1909 presidency is evidence of the many important historical events she experienced; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Loving was a "career woman" who was dedicated to a legal and political career for half her life as she served as a legal secretary for over 50 years; and

     WHEREAS, she began her legal career by first working with her husband, Byron Herald Loving, who was both a State Representative and Senator from Clay County; and

     WHEREAS, her career evolved to include serving as a deputy circuit clerk during the tenures of T.H. Moseley and David Arthur Vaughn, as an election poll worker for several decades, and as an election commissioner for Clay County from 1969-1984; and

     WHEREAS, to cherish her loving memory and carry on her legacy, she leaves four children:  Lenore Loving Prather, Ida Loving Cunetto, Marmion Loving Francis and James Morris Loving, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor the lives and memory of honorable Mississippians such as "Mama Hattie" Hearn Morris Loving, whose life was an inspiration to her community:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of "Mama" Hattie Hearn Morris Loving and express our sympathy upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Loving and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
