A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING TRISTAN CALDWELL ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2006 AT&T MALE SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR FOR THE STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Tristan Caldwell, a vibrant ten-year-old boy from Brandon, Mississippi, was selected as the 2006 AT&T Male Sportsman of the Year for the State Games of Mississippi, which are held annually in Meridian, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, this distinguished award seeks to honor athletes, who personify the ideals of the state games, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and

     WHEREAS, Tristan, who superbly exhibits all the attributes of the Sportsman of the Year, has participated in the State Games of Mississippi for two years; and

     WHEREAS, due to his dedication and enthusiasm for the sport of martial arts, Tristan won medals at both the State Games of Mississippi and the State Games of America; and

     WHEREAS, more specifically, in 2005 and 2006, Tristan won four gold medals in weapons, kata, kumite and board breaking at the  State Games of Mississippi, held in Meridian, Mississippi, and in 2005, at the State Games of America held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he won two gold medals in weapons and kata and a bronze medal in kumite; and

     WHEREAS, Tristan has also won other awards in martial arts such as the following:  Mississippi Karate Association (MKA) 2004 State Champion in kata, 1st runner up in kumite; 2006 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Double State Champion, gold medal in kata and weapons and a bronze in kumite; 2006 AAU Southern Regional National Qualifier, gold medal in kata, silver in kumite and a bronze in weapons and 2006 MKA Double State Champion in kata and weapons; and

     WHEREAS, Tristan, who has a martial arts warrior spirit, has demonstrated excellent skills and talents in martial arts and has  brought great honor and pride not only to himself but also to his family, friends, teachers and the great State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend an outstanding young Mississippian such as Tristan Caldwell, who at the age of 10, is not only an inspiration to young people but to all who are young at heart:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Tristan Caldwell on being selected as the 2006 AT&T Male Sportsman of the Year and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Tristan Caldwell and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
