House Resolution 11

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. GREGORY HOSKINS FOR BEING APPOINTED AS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN POLICE CHIEF FOR THE CITY OF CLARKSDALE.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Gregory Hoskins is honored to be appointed as the first African-American Police Chief for the City of Clarksdale; and

     WHEREAS, this prestigious appointment was given to him on October 2, 2006; and

     WHEREAS, he is supported in his endeavors by his wife, Lula, and three daughters, Renita, Cherelle and Kenisha; and

     WHEREAS, he is a faithful member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksdale, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, his career with the Clarksdale Police Department spans a 21-year period that began on December 26, 1985; and

     WHEREAS, after serving many years as an officer, he was promoted to Sergeant on July 17, 1990, to Captain on December 9, 1996, to Assistant Chief on January 5, 1999, and to Interim Chief on July 10, 2006; and

     WHEREAS, as one who views his job as a calling, Chief Hoskins has implemented a number of programs to improve the lifestyles of the citizens within the community; and

     WHEREAS, the school mentor program, college recruitment plan,  "Clean Up Gang Graffiti Day," Punt Pass Kick Day, Father's Day Out at the Schools, Merchant Contact Program, Pinning Ceremony for Promotional Officers, Officer of the Month Program and Second Chance Program were all implemented by Chief Hoskins during his career with the Clarksdale Police Department:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Gregory Hoskins for being appointed as the first African-American Police Chief for the City of Clarksdale, Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Chief Gregory Hoskins, the Clarksdale Police Department and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
