House Resolution 5

A RESOLUTION URGING MISSISSIPPI'S BUSINESSES AND INDUSTRIES TO HELP PROTECT THE HEALTH, WELL-BEING AND INVESTMENT MADE IN THE STATE'S WORKFORCE BY IMPLEMENTING ERGONOMIC PRACTICES AND PROGRAMS PROVEN TO PREVENT AND RELIEVE MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS.

     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives recognizes that some transient discomforts are normal and unavoidable consequences of work; and

     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives recognizes that other workplace disorders are identifiable injuries fitting established diagnostic criteria; and

     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives takes notice that each year substantial numbers of Mississippi workers continue to suffer diagnosed and serious musculoskeletal disorders resulting in lost work days, permanent disability and job loss; and

     WHEREAS, the citizens of Mississippi are making commendable, earnest and costly investments to train, sustain and retain a competitive workforce; and

     WHEREAS, any subjection of segments of Mississippi's workforce to musculoskeletal injuries cannot be considered an acceptable exchange for the investment made in their development and training; and

     WHEREAS, the Legislature is reliably advised that work-related musculoskeletal disorders can be readily managed and corrected by implementing proven ergonomic health and safety programs; and

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby urge Mississippi's businesses and industries to help protect the health, well-being and investment made in the state's workforce by implementing ergonomic practices and programs proven to prevent and relieve musculoskeletal disorders.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be provided to all businesses within the state having fifty or more employees and the Capitol Press Corps.
