A RESOLUTION URGING THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO ADOPT A POLICY TO PUBLISH ON THE INTERNET ALL ROLL CALL VOTES TAKEN BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, the Mississippi House of Representatives is a public
body that seeks to make its public records easily accessible to the citizens; and
WHEREAS, the members of the House have observed the increased use of the Internet by our electorate to obtain information, to communicate with others, and to access electronic records by means of computers; and
WHEREAS, at the present time, immediate publication of the roll call votes of House members on the various measures and questions that the House considers is limited to paper copies of such roll call votes available in the Clerk's Office, with final publication later in the official House Journal; and
WHEREAS, the members of the House seek to make decisions that will best benefit the citizens of our respective districts and the entire state, and the publication of roll call votes on the Internet will benefit our citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Rules of the House of Representatives provide that the House Management Committee shall conduct the business affairs of the House and shall continually assess ways to improve the organization and procedures of the House:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby urge the House Management Committee to adopt a policy that all roll call votes taken in the House of Representatives shall be published on the Internet, starting with the 2007 Regular Session, and to direct the Clerk to take the necessary actions to effectuate that policy.
