A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE UNITED PARCEL SERVICE OF AMERICA, INC. (UPS), UPON THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 100TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY AND COMMENDING THE COMPANY FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITIZENS OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS,August 28, 2007, marks the100th anniversary of a global corporate icon, the United Parcel Service of America, Inc. (UPS), the world’s largest package delivery company that stands today as a critical pipeline for global economic activity; and

     WHEREAS, UPS was founded in 1907 in the City of Seattle by a 19-year-old teenager named Jim Casey, who borrowed $100.00 to start his own messenger service and over the past 100 years, the world has witnessed the transformation of this company from a $100.00 single-city bicycle messenger company into a $47 billion company; and 

     WHEREAS, throughout the past 100 years, Mr. Casey has guided the transformation of this company from one primarily focused on package delivery in the United States to a broader provider of transportation-based supply chain services; and

     WHEREAS, its transformation from a department-store type delivery service into a common carrier offering package delivery service throughout the United States, an international package delivery service with its own airline, and now, a trusted business partner that enables commerce for its customers by synchronizing the flow of goods, information and money has made it the global corporate icon it is today; and

     WHEREAS, UPS employs more than 427,000 people, operates the world’s largest package delivery network, operates the planet’s eighth-largest airline, utilizes almost 92,000 vehicles, and offers an ever-expanding array of supply chain services; and

     WHEREAS, the company has served Mississippi since 1971 and currently employs more than 2,200 people who operate 22 package sorting facilities and makes more than 75,000 package deliveries each business day in Mississippi, connecting people, communities, and businesses; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to its business contributions, UPS incorporates an emphasis on community service and citizenship that is evidenced by its donation of thousands of dollars annually to many charitable organizations, including the Mississippi Food Network and the United Way; and

     WHEREAS, UPS came to the rescue of Mississippians during the Hurricane Katrina crisis by donating a whopping $1.25 million to assist Hurricane Katrina relief efforts for Mississippi and Gulf Coast residents; and

     WHEREAS, UPS strives to continue to provide both a substantial economic impact to the people of Mississippi and focus on cultivating deep partnerships with the communities it serves; and  

     WHEREAS, the services that UPS provides connect the people of Mississippi to more than 200 countries through an expansive transportation network that truly synchronizes global commerce; and

     WHEREAS, UPS quickly restored service after Hurricane Katrina in spite of the 20 package hubs and centers throughout the region that suffered damage during Katrina and had to be repaired at a total cost of $8.3 million; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and honor companies that not only create economic development opportunities within the state, but give back to our communities in times of crisis:

     NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate the United Parcel Service Of America, Inc. (UPS), upon celebrating its 100th year anniversary and commend the company for its contributions to the citizens of Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mississippi employees of the United Parcel Service of America, Inc., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
