AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE GOVERNING AUTHORITIES OF THE CITY OF JACKSON TO IMPOSE AN ASSESSMENT NOT TO EXCEED ONE DOLLAR TO BE LEVIED IN THE MUNICIPAL COURT UPON EACH VIOLATION FOR WHICH A UNIFORM TRAFFIC TICKET IS ISSUED BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OF THE MUNICIPALITY; TO PROVIDE THAT THE PROCEEDS FROM THE ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT SHALL BE EXPENDED SOLELY TO OFFSET THE COST TO THE MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF CERTAIN COMPUTERIZED CRIME PREVENTION EQUIPMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The governing authorities of the City of Jackson, in their discretion, by order duly adopted and entered upon their minutes, may impose an assessment to be levied in the municipal court, in addition to any other assessments or court costs, not to exceed One Dollar ($1.00) upon each violation for which a uniform traffic ticket is issued by a law enforcement officer of the municipality.

     (2)  The proceeds from the additional assessment levied under subsection (1) of this section shall be expended by the governing authorities solely to offset the cost to the municipal police department for implementation of certain computerized crime prevention equipment.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
