House Bill 1416

AN ACT TO PROHIBIT PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS IN GRADES 7-12 WHO FAIL TO MAINTAIN A CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 2.0 ON A 4.0 SCALE FROM PARTICIPATING IN EXTRACURRICULAR ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1.  A student who is enrolled in any grade higher than Grade 6 in a school district in this state must be suspended from participation in any extracurricular athletic activity sponsored or sanctioned by the school district after a grade evaluation period in which the student's cumulative grade point average is below a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.  The suspension from participation in extracurricular athletic activities may not be removed until the student's cumulative grade point average in a succeeding grading period is 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; however, a suspension from extracurricular athletic activities may not last beyond the end of that school year.  For purposes of this section, the term "grade evaluation period" means a grade reporting period of six (6) or nine (9) weeks, whichever is utilized by the school district in which the student is enrolled.

SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
