House Bill 1017

AN ACT TO PROHIBIT ANY COUNTY, MUNICIPALITY OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION FROM ENACTING OR ENFORCING ANY EXISTING ORDINANCE PROHIBITING THE LAWFUL OWNERSHIP OF DOMESTIC DOGS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  No county, municipality or other political subdivision shall enact or enforce any existing ordinance prohibiting the lawful ownership of domestic dogs, within the premises of the owner or during the transportation of such domestic dogs within such county, municipality or other political subdivisions pursuant to the leash laws of the state until such time as the state may authorize a county, municipality or other political subdivision to enact such an ordinance.  This section specifically prohibits the enactment or enforcement of any existing breed-specific ordinance that is more restrictive than the limits authorized by the general laws of the state.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
