House Bill 995

AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 37-13-193, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO INCLUDE CIVIL RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION AS A PART OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL CURRICULUM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Section 37-13-193, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     37-13-193.  The State Board of Education shall make civil rights and human rights education a part of the K-12 curriculum of instruction in Mississippi public schools.  The State Department of Education shall work with the Mississippi Civil Rights Education Commission established in Section 37-13-195 in performing the following duties:

          (a)  Providing assistance and advice to K-12 schools with respect to the Civil Rights Movement and human rights education and awareness programs;

          (b)  Surveying and cataloging the extent to which civil rights and human rights education exists in state curricula;

          (c)  Inventorying civil rights memorials, exhibits and resources that could be used in classrooms and other educational programs;

          (d)  Compiling a list of volunteers who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences concerning the struggle for civil rights; and

          (e)  Preparing reports for the Governor and the State Legislature on the inclusion of civil rights studies into the educational systems of the state.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
