AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE GOVERNING AUTHORITIES OF ANY MUNICIPALITY OR THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ANY COUNTY TO DEDUCT OR PERMIT TO BE DEDUCTED FROM THE SALARY OF A MUNICIPAL OR COUNTY EMPLOYEE DUES OR FEES PAYABLE TO AN ORGANIZATION OR ASSOCIATION AT THE WRITTEN REQUEST OF THE EMPLOYEE INVOLVED; TO AMEND SECTION 25-3-67, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, IN CONFORMITY WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The governing authorities of any municipality or the board of supervisors of any county may deduct or permit to be deducted from the salary of a municipal or county employee, with a written request by the employee involved, any dues or fees payable to an organization or association because of membership of the employee in the organization or association. 

     SECTION 2.  Section 25-3-67, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     25-3-67.  The governing authorities of any municipality may, within their discretion, deduct from the salary of any individual municipal employee an amount to be deposited with the municipal credit union, contributions for the United Way, life, health-and-accident insurance and United States Savings Bonds and any dues or fees payable to an organization or association because of the membership of the employee in the organization or association as provided under Section 1 of this act, if a request for such deductions is made in writing by the employee.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
