House Amendments to Senate Bill No. 2269

 

TO THE SECRETARY OF THE SENATE:

 

  THIS IS TO INFORM YOU THAT THE HOUSE HAS ADOPTED THE AMENDMENTS SET OUT BELOW:

 

 

AMENDMENT NO. 1

 

     Amend by striking all after the enacting clause and inserting in lieu thereof the following:

 


     SECTION 1.  The Administrative Office of Courts shall study the need for the use of interpreters in all courts in the State of Mississippi.  In conducting the study, the Administrative Office of Courts shall examine the use of interpreters throughout the nation with an emphasis on the laws and programs in contiguous states, the necessary funding to provide a workable interpreter program and any other information necessary to provide a program which will guarantee the administration of fair and impartial justice involving persons who cannot understand English well enough to participate fully in judicial proceedings and to assist counsel.  The Administrative Office of Courts shall submit its recommendations to the Legislature no later than December 1, 2006.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.  


     Further, amend by striking the title in its entirety and inserting in lieu thereof the following:

 


     AN ACT TO REQUIRE THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF COURTS TO STUDY THE NEED FOR THE USE OF INTERPRETERS IN JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS IN THE STATE; TO REQUIRE A REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
