AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO DEFRAY THE COSTS OF OPERATING THE CIRCUIT AND CHANCERY COURTS, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS AND CRIMINAL INDIGENT DEFENSE DEPARTMENTS IN HARRISON, HANCOCK AND JACKSON COUNTIES, FOR THE 2006 AND 2007 FISCAL YEARS.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  That the following sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary, is hereby appropriated out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, to the Mississippi Supreme Court, Office of Court Administrator, for the purpose of defraying the costs of operating the Circuit and Chancery Courts, the Office of District Attorney and the Office of Criminal Indigent Defense in Harrison, Hancock and Jackson Counties, for the period beginning from and after passage, and ending June 30, 2007, as follows:

HARRISON COUNTY

Circuit Court................................ $  516,918.52

Chancery Court................................   435,399.75

District Attorney.............................   521,796.00

Indigent Defense..............................   533,010.00

Total................................... $2,007,124.27

HANCOCK COUNTY

Circuit Court................................ $  197,116.28

Chancery Court................................   165,296.08

District Attorney.............................    41,006.84

Indigent Defense..............................   146,667.00

Total................................... $  550,086.20

JACKSON COUNTY

Circuit Court................................ $  570,730.00

Chancery Court................................   487,799.00

District Attorney.............................   307,468.00

Indigent Defense..............................   607,461.00

Total................................... $1,973,458.00

     (2)  It is the intent of the Legislature to assist the counties hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina to recover while maintaining the essential services of our state criminal and civil courts serving the continuing needs of our citizens.  There shall be deducted from the amounts herein appropriated, any funds made available from federal sources for the operation of the court systems in the above-named counties due to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

     (3)  The money appropriated in this act shall be paid by the State Treasurer out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, upon warrants issued by the State Fiscal Officer; and the State Fiscal Officer shall issue his warrants upon requisitions signed by the proper person, officer or officers in the manner provided by law.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
