A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, CAREER AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF MR. ROBERT T. SMITH TO MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR HIS SELFLESS AND MERITORIOUS DEDICATION.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Robert T. Smith, has consistently been the voice championing the cause and success of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) for a period spanning more than 40 years; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Smith's advocacy for MGCCC began on June 1, 1965, when he was employed in the institution's technology department, where he led the department throughout its period of growth and development until his retirement on July 1, 2000; and

     WHEREAS, since retiring, Mr. Smith has continued to maintain his zeal for the betterment of MGCCC by serving as its governmental liaison on a part-time basis; and

     WHEREAS, a graduate of the Perkinston Campus, he holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and used his education and people skills to have a positive impact in the lives of hundreds of young people in the Gulfport area as an educator, a coach and a friend; and

     WHEREAS, equipped with pizzazz and a talent for effectuating change, Mr. Smith worked tirelessly to nurture the best interest of the MGCCC, the state community college system and the Mississippi Gulf Coast; and

     WHEREAS, Robert T. Smith and his wife, Diane, who is also an educator, have raised a wonderful family and contribute constantly to the quality of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the excellence of such outstanding and selfless individuals as Mr. Smith, whose lifework has been dedicated to the betterment of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life, career and contributions of Mr. Robert T. Smith to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and express  appreciation for his selfless and meritorious dedication.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Robert T. Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
