A RESOLUTION COMMENDING BRUCE BRUMFIELD UPON RECEIVING THE 2005 HARRY S. BAKER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD FOR COTTON.

     WHEREAS, Bruce Brumfield, a former National Cotton Council (NCC) president and cotton producer from Inverness, Mississippi, recently received the 2005 Harry S. Baker Distinguished Service Award for Cotton, presented at the NCC's 2006 annual meeting in Tucson, Arizona; and

     WHEREAS, named for the late California industry leader and NCC president, the award is presented each year to a person who has provided extraordinary service, leadership and dedication to the United States cotton industry; and

     WHEREAS, a partner in Brumfield Plantation and FTB Farms, Mr. Brumfield is also Vice President of Duncan Gin, Inc., in Inverness; and

     WHEREAS, a past chairman of the NCC's produce steering committee and past President of the Delta Council and Mississippi Cattleman's Association, Mr. Brumfield became chairman of the NCC board in 1995 after serving as the council's president in 1994; and

     WHEREAS, currently serving as a director for Staplcotn Cooperative, the Community Bank of Indianola, Delta Pride Catfish  and Delta Western, Inc., Mr. Brumfield was one of 11 members to the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture; and

     WHEREAS, the 21st Century Commission presented a comprehensive report to President Bush and Congress on the status of United States production agriculture after the FAIR Act; and

     WHEREAS, to his accomplishments, Mr. Brumfield was named Progressive Farmer's Mississippi Man of the Year in Agriculture in 1999 and Mississippi State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni fellow in 2001; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the success of Mississippians such as Mr. Brumfield, whose significant contributions to the agricultural industry have not gone without recognition:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Bruce Brumfield upon receiving the 2005 Harry S. Baker Distinguished Service Award for Cotton and extend our best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Bruce Brumfield and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
