 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COACH JOHNNY HILL FOR HIS SELECTION AS HEAD COACH OF THE MISSISSIPPI ALL-STAR FOOTBALL TEAM THAT WILL COMPETE IN THE ALABAMA/MISSISSIPPI ALL-STAR CLASSIC THIS SUMMER AND FOR HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN COACHING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.

     WHEREAS, Johnny Hill, the head football coach of Oxford High School, has been selected to be head coach of the Mississippi All-Star Football Team that will compete in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Classic in Mobile, Alabama, on June 3, 2006; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Coach Hill played football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and he has coached high school football for 30 years at Holly Springs, Marshall Academy, Warren Central, Oxford, Tupelo and again at Oxford, where he has been for the past six years; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Hill has had remarkable success throughout his career, compiling an overall record of 166 wins and 61 losses - a winning percentage of 73% - and he has taken his teams to the playoffs for 16 years of the 20 years he has been a head coach; and

     WHEREAS, during the 2003-2004 season, Coach Hill led Oxford to the North Mississippi Football Championship for the first time and competed in the State Championship game, and under his superb guidance in the 2004-2005 season, Oxford was undefeated during the regular season for the first time in 50 years with 10 victories and no losses, and had the most wins (13) in a single season in the history of the school; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Hill has been honored for his outstanding achievements by being selected as District Coach of the Year nine times, serving as President of the Mississippi Association of Coaches and past President of the Athletic Directors Association; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, Coach Hill has been supported by his wife, Linda Owens, with whom he has four sons, all of whom have been exceptional athletes:  Walt, who played football at Ole Miss; Chad, who played baseball at Ole Miss and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays major league baseball team; Jake, who played football at Ole Miss; and Stan, who played football at Marshall University and was drafted by the Memphis Explorers arena football team; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend the excellence and many contributions of outstanding Mississippians such as Coach Johnny Hill, who has taught the values of competition and sportsmanship to countless young athletes during his career:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate Coach Johnny Hill of Oxford High School for his selection as head coach of the Mississippi All-Star Football Team that will compete in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Classic on June 3, 2006, and for his many accomplishments in coaching high school football throughout the years.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Johnny Hill and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
