House Concurrent Resolution 72

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND FOR WINNING THE 2005 CLASS 2A MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Philadelphia High School Marching Band was awarded the 2005 Class 2A Marching Band Championship; and

     WHEREAS, this outstanding band achieved this honor under the direction of Mr. Tom Henry, Director of Bands and David Williams, assistant director; and

     WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Band Program has a long, rich history in winning prestigious band awards; and

     WHEREAS, in 1951, the band began a 55-year tradition of earning superior ratings at the MHSAA State Band Festival that has continued through 2005; and

     WHEREAS, the band has earned at least one superior rating in the major categories for 53 years, and has earned All-Superior ratings for 30 years; and

     WHEREAS, historically, in 1952, the band has appeared in the 48th American Legion Parade in New York City and in 1958, the 12th Annual Mid-West Band Clinic in Chicago; and 

     WHEREAS, the band earned superior ratings, 1st Place Awards and Sweepstakes Awards at festivals in Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the special accomplishments of such an outstanding group of student-musicians who have brought honor to their school, their parents, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend the Philadelphia High School Marching Band and their directors for winning the 2005 Class 2A Marching Band Championship.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Principal of Philadelphia High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
