AN ACT TO CREATE A NEW SECTION TO BE CODIFIED AS SECTION 35-3-28, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE THE MISSISSIPPI VETERAN AFFAIRS BOARD TO ISSUE CERTIFICATES HONORING AND COMMENDING RESIDENT VETERANS OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI FOR SERVICES RENDERED TO THE STATE AND NATION; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The following shall be codified as Section 35-3-28, Mississippi Code of 1972:

     35-3-28.  (1)  The Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board shall issue a certificate honoring and commending any Mississippi resident who is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces for the services rendered to this state and nation upon a showing of proof of service by the veteran to the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board.

     (2)  The appearance and design of any such certificate shall be determined by the board and shall include the state seal and the insignia or crest of the respective branch of the United States Armed Forces.  The commending language shall read as follows:

"The State of Mississippi

honors and commends the service of

[Veteran's Name]

This certificate is awarded by a grateful state

in recognition of devoted and selfless service

to our state and nation in the

Armed Forces of the United States."

The certificate shall also contain places for the signature of the Governor of the State of Mississippi and the Executive Director of the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2006.
