AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL OF PHARMACY SHALL GRANT A NONTRADITIONAL DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PHARMD) DEGREE TO ANY LICENSED PHARMACIST IN MISSISSIPPI WHO HOLDS A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN PHARMACY, WHO HAS AT LEAST FIVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A PHARMACIST, AND WHO HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED MINIMUM CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS IN CERTAIN FIELDS OF DISEASE STATE MANAGEMENT; TO DIRECT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL OF PHARMACY TO OFFER OR PROVIDE FOR THE OFFERING OF CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES IN CERTAIN FIELDS OF DISEASE STATE MANAGEMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy shall grant a nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree to any pharmacist who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy and who meets the following criteria:

          (a)  Holds a current, unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in the State of Mississippi;

          (b)  Has not less than five (5) years of experience as a pharmacist; and

          (c)  Who has successfully completed sixteen (16) hours of continuing education credit, eight (8) hours of which must be live, in each of the fields of disease state management of dyslipidemia, asthma, diabetes and anticoagulation, for a total of sixty-four (64) hours.  The sixty-four (64) hours of continuing education credit must be obtained from programs presented by the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy or approved by the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy and must be completed within a period of two (2) years from the date of enrollment.

     (2)  The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy shall offer or provide for the offering of continuing education courses in the following fields of disease state management:  dyslipidemia, asthma, diabetes and anticoagulation.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2006.
