House Bill 187

AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 71-1-21, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROHIBIT CHILDREN UNDER A CERTAIN AGE FROM WORKING AFTER 10:00 P.M. DURING THE WEEK OF A SCHOOL YEAR; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Section 71-1-21, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

     71-1-21.  (1)  No boy or girl over fourteen (14) years of age and under sixteen (16) years shall be permitted to work in any mill, cannery, workshop, factory, or manufacturing establishment more than eight (8) hours in one (1) day, or more than forty-four (44) hours in any one (1) week, or be employed in or detained in any such establishment between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

     (2)  In addition to the provisions in subsection (1) of this section, no child under the age of eighteen (18) years of age shall be employed in any employment establishment after the hours of 10:00 p.m. during Monday through Thursday nights of an academic school year.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2006.
