House Bill 144

AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT WHEN AN AREA HAS BEEN ANNEXED BY A CITY OR COUNTY WITH REGARD TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS, A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN MAY CHOOSE WHICH SCHOOL DISTRICT THEIR STUDENT WILL ATTEND; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law, when a county or municipal school district annexes an area of another county or municipal school district, then the parent or legal guardian of a student may choose which school district their student will attend.

     SECTION 2.  Section 1 of this Act shall be codified as a new section in Title 37, Chapter 7 of the Mississippi Code of 1972.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2006.
