A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HOLLY SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL "MIGHTY HAWKS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH NAYLOND HAYES FOR WINNING THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT CLASS 3-A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2004-2005 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, the Holly Springs High School "Mighty Hawks" Boys Basketball Team captured their second straight Class 3-A State Basketball Championship on Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi, in a convincing 47-35 win over Franklin County High School; and

     WHEREAS, the "Bad" Hawks got 23 points from super senior floor leader Kenny Dawkins before a near sellout crowd of 7,000 which witnessed the impressive scoring statement and the hoisting of their Class 3-A State Championship trophy; and

     WHEREAS, the Hawks lulled the opponents into a false sense of security in the fourth period before Brandon Ayers took a high pass and scored, giving the partisan crowd the lift it had been clamoring for; 28 seconds later the Hawks had a 10-point lead and would not look back; and

     WHEREAS, the team is under the leadership of popular Head Coach Naylond Hayes, who finished the championship run with a record of 43-1; and

     WHEREAS, the Hawks won the following tournaments on their path to the State Championship:  the Coldwater Invitational, the Bi-County Tournament, the Division 1 and North-Half Championship Tournaments; and

     WHEREAS, the following team members' contributions earned them special honors in this championship season:  Kenny Dawkins, Senior, All-District and All-State Team; Justin Nabors, Senior, All-District and All-State Honorable Mention; and Clevin Hannah, Junior, All-State Honorable Mention; and

     WHEREAS, the Coach and staff of this team stated that the consecutive championship was a blessing earned by great leadership, commitment and the will to achieve their goals; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the accomplishments of this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Holly Springs High School "Mighty Hawks" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Naylond Hayes for winning the Class 3-A State Championship and for their outstanding 2004-2005 season, and extend to them the best wishes of the Legislature for success in their future academic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Hayes and the Principal of Holly Springs High School, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
