A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING REPRESENTATIVE MAY WHITTINGTON UPON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2005 AMERICAN SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Representative May Whittington, now in her sixth year of legislative service with the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing District 34, consisting of Carroll, Humphreys, Leflore, Montgomery, Washington and Holmes Counties has been recently named the 2005 American School Counselor Association Legislator of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi School Counselor Association, with more than 500 members across the state, nominated Representative Whittington for this honor for her enthusiasm and work for education throughout the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Whittington, will receive this honor at the Awards Recognition Gala on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, during the ASCA Conference in Orlando, Florida; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to receiving this award, Representative Whittington's photograph and examples of her leadership and advocacy for the school counseling profession will be highlighted throughout the conference; and

     WHEREAS, with a membership of more than 17,000 school counseling professionals, the ASCA focuses on providing professional development, enhancing school counseling programs and researching effective school counseling practices; and

     WHEREAS, upholding the mission of the ASCA, Representative Whittington's commitment to ensuring that the standards of the school counseling profession are maintained is evident through her work on the House Education Committee; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend Representative Whittington for her dedicated service to the people of the State of Mississippi and for the personal sacrifices which have brought esteemed honor to herself, the Mississippi House of Representatives and the entire State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend our friend and colleague, Representative May Whittington, for her selection as the 2005 American School Counselor Association Legislator of the Year.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative May Whittington and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
