House Resolution 20

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MR. WENDELL SMITH UPON HIS SELECTION AS INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR AT THE WEST HARRISON CENTER OF THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

WHEREAS, Mr. Wendell Smith, a resident of Gulfport, Mississippi, has been selected as Instructor of the Year at the West Harrison Center of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in recognition of his distinguished service to the college; and

WHEREAS, the award was established by the Alumni Association of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) to honor instructors at the college, and the recipient of the award is chosen from nominations submitted by students, faculty and administrators on the basis of their teaching excellence, college service, community service and professional development; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith, a culinary arts instructor, has been employed and taught at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the past 19 years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith, who received his associate of applied science degree from MGCCC, bachelor of science degree in industrial and vocational education from the University of Southern Mississippi, serves as a VICA advisor and assists students in national clubs and organizations; and

WHEREAS, named West Harrison Center's 2001 Teacher of the Year, Mr. Smith has served as National Culinary Student Representative and member of the American Culinary Federation wherein he has held offices such as chairman of the board, president, secretary and treasurer; and

WHEREAS, his additional honors include having received the Coast Chamber of Commerce Competition 2005 People's Choice Award, third place and second place recognition in individual competition divisions; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend such outstanding teachers as Mr. Wendell Smith, who has dedicated his career to teaching the young people of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Wendell Smith upon his selection as Instructor of the Year at the West Harrison Center of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
