A RESOLUTION COMMENDING DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, FOR ITS 92 YEARS OF COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SERVICE AND CONGRATULATING IT ON THE OCCASION OF ITS "DELTA DAY" 2005 AT THE STATE CAPITOL.

     WHEREAS, on January 13, 1913, twenty-two women driven with a desire to serve the community and to promote academic excellence founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, an organization committed to public service based on Christian principles; and

     WHEREAS, this year the sorority is celebrating its 92nd anniversary by hosting activities that commemorate the founders of Delta Sigma Theta and by reaffirming the purpose of the organization; and

     WHEREAS, the national and local public service activities provided to communities target the sorority's Five Point Programmatic Thrust to promote Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness and Involvement; and

     WHEREAS, this sisterhood has grown to more than 200,000 college-educated women with over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Panama Canal, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea; and

     WHEREAS, thirty-three chapters exist throughout the great State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the Jackson Mississippi Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was established in 1941 and pioneered the first Headstart Movement in this state, and is currently active with numerous activities that target the sorority's Five Point Programmatic Thrust; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the civic contributions made available by respected organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for its 92 years of commitment to public service and congratulate the sorority on the occasion of its "Delta Day" 2005 at the State Capitol.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be furnished to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
