House Resolution 17

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING JARVIS MCINNIS UPON BEING NAMED MISSISSIPPI'S 2005 YOUTH OF THE YEAR BY THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA.

     WHEREAS, Jarvis McInnis, the seventeen-year-old son of Harry and Pamela McInnis and nine-year member of the Forest Heights Unit of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast was chosen as Mississippi's 2005 Youth of the Year to represent the state in the Southeast Region competition in June; and

     WHEREAS, instrumental at his club, Jarvis participates in the choir, Keystone Club, community projects and spends time mentoring and tutoring other members in addition to being actively involved in the community with activities including the TITANS, the March of Dimes Leadership Council, Toys for Tots and WHY (Workers Helping Youth); and

     WHEREAS, now in his senior year at Harrison Central High School, Jarvis is the model student, having been selected president of the student body, maintaining a 4.12 GPA and taking active roles in the school's Club of Performing Arts, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Business Leaders of America and the Spanish Honor Society; and

     WHEREAS, having recently participated in the Mississippi Boys' State Program and selected as one of two senators to attend the Boys' Nation Program in Washington, D.C., Jarvis aspires to obtain his goal of pursuing a degree in political science and eventually earn a law degree; and

     WHEREAS, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America's "Youth of the Year" recognition program promotes and celebrates club members' service to the club, community and family, academic performance, spiritual values, life goals, poise and public speaking ability; and

     WHEREAS, a member of the Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church where he is involved in the youth department and youth choir, Jarvis' story is a remarkable one, having struggled with a speech impediment as a child, the support needed found at the Boys and Girls Club fostered a growth of confidence and self-esteem that allowed him to realize his full potential, which he now shares as a role model; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the accomplishments of such outstanding youth as Jarvis, who overcame his own life's obstacle to give back to the community through his leadership, guidance and discipline, evidencing greatness in the future of this state through its youth:

          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jarvis McInnis upon his selection as Mississippi's 2005 Youth of the Year and extend our best wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Jarvis McInnis, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast-Forest Heights Unit and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
