A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MRS. MARIAH S. GRIFFIN AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Mariah S. Griffin, born on January 21, 1920, departed this earthly life to enter into eternal rest with her heavenly father on January 12, 2005, causing great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Canton, Mississippi, and the third oldest of eight children, Mrs. Griffin commenced her formal education at Tougaloo College, where she received her bachelor of science degree in business education; and

     WHEREAS, having committed more than 39 years as a state educator in the Madison County School District as an elementary school teacher at the Mt. Pilgrim School, Old Camden School and Velma Jackson Elementary School, Mrs. Griffin also served as a board member of the Madison City School District while extending her education with a master of science degree in education; and

     WHEREAS, united in holy matrimony to Durham Griffin, Mrs. Griffin's union with her husband was blessed with three children and eight grandchildren, who supported and encouraged her in all her endeavors as she served on the Madison County School Board, Retired Teacher's Association, State Baptist Convention, Heroines of Jericho and the Madison-Leake County Baptist Association; and

     WHEREAS, her friends and family find comfort in knowing that Mrs. Griffin's belief in the promises of God was made manifest throughout her entire life and the steadfastness, loving kindness and the sincere love of Christ gave evidence of her adherence and obedience to God's word; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the life of such an outstanding Mississippian as Mrs. Griffin, who lived her life so as to be an inspiration and template of perseverance, determination and hard work:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Mrs. Mariah Griffin and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Griffin and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
