A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MRS. ALMETA COVINGTON SNOWDEN AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Almeta Covington Snowden departed this earthly life on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at the age of 89, to enter into eternal rest, causing great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, born in the Bailey Community on June 17, 1915, the daughter of Thomas Linton Covington and Ruby Mae Gibson Covington, Mrs. Snowden, during her high school years, was an outstanding athlete, twice selected for All-State basketball honors at Center High School, once scored more than 60 points in a single game and led the team to the State Championship in 1934 and a runner-up finish in 1935; and
WHEREAS, upon her graduation from Center High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Elton Monroe Snowden, and for 49 years they operated E.M. Snowden's Shell Service Station in downtown Meridian; and
WHEREAS, a faithful Christian whose entire life exemplified love for her Lord and her church, Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church, Mrs. Snowden worked diligently in many capacities, including working with Sunday School, Training Union, choirs, children's ministries and the missions organization; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Snowden loved music and was beloved by her family and friends, who will cherish her memory forever; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death in 2002 by her husband of 67 years, Mrs. Snowden's memory will continue to warm the hearts of her survivors, including: children, Dr. Gail Snowden Hasson (John), Gloria Snowden Hilliard (Michael) and Representative Greg Snowden (Renee); six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six sisters; two brothers; and a host of other relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence in the lives of such notable Mississippians as Mrs. Snowden, whose life served as a beacon of light, inspiration and encouragement, and whose love of life and humanity transcended all barriers:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Mrs. Almeta Covington Snowden and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Snowden and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
